Understanding Poverty: A Prerequisite for Democratic Society

Understanding Poverty: A Prerequisite for Democratic Society

February 28, 2024

In the realm of democracy, poverty emerges as a significant threat, not only excluding individuals from participating in the democratic process but also from fully engaging in society, rendering them susceptible to various forms of irrational behavior. Understanding poverty is paramount, yet it remains misunderstood even among the educated. One perplexing aspect for many is how a person in poverty could possess more expensive technology than themselves.

Poverty intertwines intricately with mental health, forming a complex relationship where individuals with mental health issues spiral into poverty, while those in poverty are more prone to experiencing mental illness. It manifests as a chronic condition, transmitted within families or small groups, persisting across generations. Poverty, fundamentally, is a societal ailment, rooted in structures of exclusion.

Returning to the query posed by my friends, the inability of those with unstable incomes to plan and prioritize leads to short-term thinking, immediate needs taking precedence over long-term goals. They exist in survival mode, seeking fleeting moments of happiness. Traditional programs aimed at teaching budgeting and savings often fall short. Exceptions exist, such as migrants, who, by breaking away from their native societies, embark on a journey where they perceive more opportunities, thus increasing their chances of success.

To combat poverty, a nation must perceive it as a disease—a societal affliction requiring tailored solutions for healing. This entails inclusivity and destigmatization, akin to the measures taken to remove stigma from drug addiction. This insight holds particular relevance for island nations like Curaçao, where approximately 30% of the population lives below the poverty line, making it the poorest country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands and ranking 7th globally in terms of high emigration rates.

In conclusion, grasping the intricacies of poverty is essential for fostering a genuinely democratic society. By acknowledging it as a societal illness and implementing inclusive measures, nations can work towards alleviating its grip and creating a more equitable future for all.

Understanding poverty in a small island state certainly means looking beyond income shortages. It covers a web of socio-economic dimensions. To combat poverty, we must address these multi-faceted aspects.

As you point out, by implementing inclusive policies, promoting education and ensuring equal opportunities, we can work together to create a more just and democratic future for all.
