The Third World War

This week, the Dutch government informed its citizens—and as part of the Kingdom, this includes us—to prepare for the possibility of war. The very next day, we were advised to keep cash at home. And the next day, the secretary general of NATO, the former Dutch prime minister, pleaded that the member nations should increase their war spending. These warnings were not just issued nationally but echoed locally as well. That same day, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp went down, followed shortly by disruptions to ChatGPT.

People must understand that war has evolved; cyber warfare is a key battlefield. While the causes of these platform outages remain unclear, the timing feels ominous.

The world’s flashpoints are multiplying and intensifying. This trend has been building for years, and I believe that when historians look back fifty years from now, they will trace its roots to 2001. The drivers? Globalization, shifting power centers, climate change, inequality, and the collision of religion and culture.

I hope I’m wrong, but the reality is hard to ignore: the government warns us about war.
