The Monster
July 22, 2024
This morning, I was once again startled by a newspaper report. This time, it was about the imminent "destruction" of Caracas Bay. When this was announced on December 31, 2023, there was a great deal of disapproval. I had hoped that the authorities would reconsider their decision; as the Dutch saying goes, "beter ten halve gekeerd dan ten hele gedwaald`"
This situation reminds me of the Monster of Knip. About four years ago, the minister VVRP, CTB, and others started building a massive staircase that would permanently ruin the iconic view of one of the world's most beautiful beaches, according to various international polls. After significant opposition, the structure had to be removed, and the area was restored to its original state. This year, the beach was washed away by a heavy downpour, a consequence of climate change that the government and society continue to ignore despite the constant unusual heat and shifting cyclone patterns.
Bear in mind that this government promised to govern with the people for the people.
These two cases demonstrate that our public governance does not learn. It fails to pick up signals from the environment. Public governance is autistic. The government's behavior will also be addressed in the masterclass on September 19 and 20, 2024.
