Rediscovering Moral Ambition

May 6, 2024

I'm almost finished with Bregman's book. He talks about moral ambition, arguing that much talent is wasted because smart people fall into the trap of money. They end up in large consulting firms and become estranged from solving real problems like poverty, inequality, and climate change.

In his book, he tries to explain how we can rediscover our moral ambition and make a difference without feeling entirely powerless. There is, of course, a connection to his previous works. I think of two in particular: "Utopia for Realists", where he argues for the implementation of a universal basic income, and "Humankind", where he argues that most people are inherently good.

Rutger Bregman is actually a symbol of dissent, an advocate for dissenting voices. I found his most remarkable moment to be when he spoke at Davos, in the lion's den, admonishing the billionaires who pose as philanthropists to simply pay their taxes first.
