In a Capitalistic System, Women Will Never Be Equal to Men

In a recent interview, writer Doortje Smithuisen boldly declared that within a capitalistic system, women will never achieve true equality with men (Grosfeld, 2024). As I read about her insights, I couldn't help but ponder the enduring relevance of the gender debate, despite the ‘advances’ we've made in recent years.

Smithuisen's latest book serves as a poignant exploration of the intersection between capitalism and sexism. While she acknowledges that this connection isn't new to her, she admits to feeling somewhat disillusioned by the persistence of gender disparities. At 32 years old, she reflects on her own experiences, particularly noting how traditional gender roles became glaringly apparent when she began living with her partner. The burden of household chores and domestic responsibilities fell disproportionately on her shoulders, a stark reminder of societal expectations.

But it's not just women who bear the brunt of these expectations; men are also confined within the confines of gender norms. Smithuisen highlights the double standards that persist, such as the societal acceptance of casual sex for men while women face judgment and stigma. Furthermore, she laments the lack of guidance for single women over thirty, grappling with the uncertainty of how to navigate life outside of societal norms.

In the face of these challenges, Smithuisen refuses to be defined as a victim or a loser by the system. She acknowledges the necessity of playing along with the rules to some extent, but she's reached a turning point. The status quo is no longer acceptable to her, and she's determined to challenge the system that perpetuates inequality.

Smithuisen's words resonate deeply with many women who have grown weary of the limitations imposed upon them by society. The realization that true equality may remain elusive within a capitalistic framework is disheartening, but it also serves as a rallying cry for change. As we continue to confront and dismantle the structures of oppression, let us draw inspiration from voices like Smithuisen's, driving us towards a future where equality is not just an ideal but a reality for all.
