2025

December 28, 2025

Sitting on a Sunday, taking stock of the year. This is done, but it’s too long for a blog. In many ways, 2025 feels like 2020, the year of the pandemic. Everything is somewhat on hold, waiting to see what comes of the confrontation between Trump and Maduro. It is also the year we mark fifteen years of autonomy within the Kingdom — though there is little to celebrate. For the first time, we are governed by a single party. Corruption has been widely discussed, costing several politicians their careers. The mono-economy flows like concrete lava across the island, at the expense of nature and people. The population is aging, while youth, by definition, are the future. For the so-called “gray power,” there is too little for a decent pension, and the law on general pensions remains unimplemented. Illustratively, our youth — part of the diaspora — brought the island some pride by qualifying as the smallest nation ever for the 2026 World Cup.
