All You Need Is Love

Agape love means unconditional, selfless, and self-sacrificing love that does not depend on feelings or anything in return.

The Greeks had several words for love:

Eros: romantic and physical love (passion).

Philia: friendship, affection, and companionship (reciprocity).

Storgē: the natural care and affection within a family.

When I was young, almost every record was about love—eros, that is. With the arrival of rap, this changed. This music much more often reflected the harsh realities of the ghetto and society: violence, drugs, and survival.

In any case, agape love no longer seems to be a priority. People are mainly concerned with satisfying their individual needs. Immediate gratification. This seems to go hand in hand with widespread loneliness and mental health problems. The answer remains connecting with others and being of meaning to someone else.

That is what I am thinking about today. We hardly talk about agape love anymore. And yet a society cannot exist on self-interest, rights, and transactions alone. There must also be care for others and for the common good.

Perhaps that is exactly what we should start talking about again.

All you need is love.
