You Hear Very Little
15 November 2025
It is Monday afternoon, and I still haven’t put my blog down on paper. Not because I am busy speaking to the media about the crisis between the US and Venezuela. Nor because I am carefully formulating my criticism of the volume marking fifteen years of autonomy in Curaçao. Incidentally, today is Statuut Day, the day in 1954 when the Charter was signed, and the islands' autonomy effectively began. After 10-10-10, that autonomy was mainly rearranged—rather than strengthened.
Apart from the substance of my criticism of that volume, most of my energy today went into answering one question: Does the conflict between Trump and Maduro resonate in Curaçao? In any case, it does so more with each passing day. But does it truly live among the people on the island?
I belong to the group that says: yes, it does. I just watched an item by Dick Drayer for NOS in which he cited comments from people saying they are missing information from the government. There seems to be a certain consensus about that. Very little is being said—too little.
But perhaps a day like today is fine as it is. I am going to the beach. I see on Facebook that a friend from the Netherlands is sitting in “my” chair. There, I will stare at the horizon and see whether I can spot Venezuela.
