The Harsh Reality of Whistleblowing
24 October 2025
I noted the opposition's recent initiative in Parliament to introduce legislation protecting whistleblowers. It’s a timely move—especially now that revelations about tax-related misconduct are surfacing. In principle, it’s a good thing that the opposition is taking legislative initiative, particularly in the area of integrity. We could certainly use more of that.
It reminded me of a program I once watched in the Netherlands many years ago. A protected whistleblower was interviewed about his case. He lived with his wife in a caravan in the woods—he had lost everything, including his social connections. A few years later, a student interviewed me for her thesis about whistleblower protection laws in Curaçao. I told her it was an excellent idea, one we desperately needed. But I also said that, in practice, things rarely end well for whistleblowers, even with legal protection.
That’s the sad reality. Whistleblowers often face devastating consequences across multiple dimensions: professional retaliation, legal battles, financial ruin, emotional distress, and even physical health problems. And let’s not forget the social isolation and character assassination that often follow.
I’ve never been a whistleblower, but as a leader, I've tried to correct unethical practices within organizations on several occasions. That, too, did not end well. There are many reasons why. When someone challenges the status quo, they step outside the group and are quickly seen as a traitor.
So yes, let the law come. But let’s not be naïve. Whistleblower protection laws are necessary—but they do not erase the risks. This is the international reality.
