Surfing The Blue Wave
June 23, 2026
My last piece was published on June 18. That is unusual for me. It has primarily to do with The Blue Wave.
At the moment, we seem to be living in a kind of collective state of heightened consciousness. Plenty is happening, but we do not want to talk about it. If people are writing, it has to be about football, and in particular about The Blue Wave. And that is perfectly fine. That is why I have been writing less.
The topics that currently attract the most attention are reviews of the matches, previews of the upcoming games, the growing international interest in Curaçao and what this may mean for tourism and other sectors of the economy. There is also discussion about the travel habits of public officials attending the World Cup, as well as the supposedly magical qualities of the Curaçaoan people, such as our resilience. We do not allow our small size to prevent us from dreaming big.
Then there are the so-called experts on social cohesion and nation-building, explaining how our people will now be united from this point forward.
Be that as it may, this is a beautiful moment. And it brings with it new and beautiful dreams.
Dreams of a united people.
