Sports and Festivals Connect: The Blue Wave
8 September 2025
It is Friday, September 5, 2025. In a few hours, the Curaçao national football team will take on Trinidad & Tobago. For the first time in history, Curaçao has qualified for the final tournament—six games that already feel historic.
What we see is that sport connects; it unifies. If I am not mistaken, Football Connects is even a motto. Sport is about emotion and passion. It unfolds on the turf in the stadium, but it also travels instantly around the globe through telecommunications.
In Dutch, there is a saying: sport verbroedert—sport makes us brothers. We are not conscious enough of this phenomenon. Sport has similarities with music, especially during large festivals like the Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival. Both move people and create shared experiences. Yet the reach of sport is much broader and more profound. It is less expensive, more accessible, and—most importantly—it is broadcast to millions.
Sports and festivals remind us of our human need to connect. They show us how emotion and passion can dissolve differences and create unity. Perhaps we should pause more often to reflect on these moments—not just as entertainment, but as powerful expressions of togetherness.
