Tomorrow, the World Cup kicks off again, and our attention will likely be focused on little else.

Today, I saw no response to my comments about the usefulness—or rather, the foolishness—of developing a new Curaçao 2050 Vision under the current government. The reaction was that it might not be such a bad idea after all to look back at everything we have achieved, including the Blue Wave’s participation in the World Cup, and then consider what we can still accomplish by 2050.

That is the psychological effect of such an achievement. We all start to believe that we are capable of great things.

Now, I do not want to spoil the celebration, but qualification for the World Cup is primarily the achievement of a group of players from the Netherlands, several football administrators from Curaçao, and a number of financial backers, including the government. Most of us contributed very little to that success. Therefore, we should not claim too much credit for it ourselves.

Once again, it proves the old saying: success has many fathers, while failure is an orphan.

Above all, let us enjoy the tournament. And let us allow it to inspire us to make a genuine contribution to this country.
