Infrastructure Connects Us
7 September 2025
Infrastructure and utilities form the hardware of connection. They are so present, so much of our daily lives, that we rarely notice them—until they fail. We often overlook the bigger picture.
Consider the road network. It connects people, making it possible to travel, work, meet, and socialize. Public transportation has the same purpose: enabling mobility across distances. Yet, when we reflect on the state of our infrastructure today, a concern arises: it is becoming increasingly complex for people to move freely, meet, and connect.
In the run-up to elections, roads suddenly receive attention and maintenance. But public transport tells another story. It has barely changed in the last fifty years, despite well-meaning privileges for senior citizens. Sidewalks are often missing or poorly designed, leaving even the simple act of walking unsafe and inconvenient.
These are not just inconveniences; they are barriers to connection. They limit how we live, work, and relate to one another. Recognizing this should lead us to ask: if infrastructure is the foundation of human connection, what picture are we painting for the future?
