Further, No One Will Have Noticed
5 February 2026
Yesterday, I chose not to write. Not because our global provider — which, after acquiring our local UTS in 2019, was supposed to launch us into the community of nations — has been stuttering with problems for four days now. It’s not the first time. In 2025, we were cut off from the rest of the world for a full 24 hours. But mentioning this now would make it seem as if I want to talk about the internet provider.
Yesterday I mostly found myself staring ahead. There was no immediate reason for that at first, until I came across yet another article reopening the discussion about the road straight through the nature reserve, the Jan Thiel salt pans (Curaçao.nu, 2026a).
The same subject, the same positions, the same arguments — and no conclusion.
About that discussion itself, a journalist dryly noted that there is, in fact, no real debate taking place at all. It will probably end up like Caracas Bay: endless talk, followed by construction anyway. The character of that small beach has since been completely lost. At that point, you begin to wonder what the purpose is of participating in a public debate whose outcome is already decided.
Today I scanned the media again, and what should catch my eye? Parliament wants clarification about the sale of UTS (Curaçao.nu, 2026b). Once more, the same question arises: what is the point? The only truly meaningful instrument would be a parliamentary inquiry. But even that raises doubts, because what did the inquiry into the massively overpriced construction of the CMC actually deliver?
And then, in the Antilliaans Dagblad, I read: “SER Curaçao has an international role.”
A carefully constructed façade.
Everything is changing, but in all directions — mostly the wrong ones. Pura brua, without vision and without direction.
