Business as Usual During Renovation

8 October 2026

I also say: during the renovation, the kitchen remains open.

I was reminded of this, among other things, because the Dutch House of Representatives raised questions about the intention to extend the country reform packages. Essentially, they do not believe that an extension will lead to actual implementation. And that position is justified.

I see the same thing in other processes. Often, members of an organization think that the business should close during renovation, but that is simply not possible.

It is difficult to explain that, during renovation, people must continue carrying out their regular duties while also working on the renovation itself. This means that people have to work harder. There is no other way.

Often, organizations are already dealing with both quantitative and qualitative staff shortages. That makes the situation understandable, but there is no alternative. Implementation means hard work.

The paradox is that it is preferable to implement changes quickly, because then the unpleasant period does not last as long.

But we have not yet developed this understanding or capability. And until we do, little will change.

It is a matter of guidance and coaching.
