Between Military Tensions and Dreams of AI

It is Tuesday evening after a long day. While the heat rises in the Caribbean Sea—and I don’t mean because of the weather, but because of the movement of military equipment on land, at sea, and in the air—life here goes on as usual.

In The Hague, a member of parliament has filed a motion urging the Dutch government to strengthen the defense of the ABC islands. An opposition member of the PAR, in the Netherlands for the IPKO meetings, also tries to convey the seriousness of the situation.

Meanwhile, here on the island, we keep dreaming. An island that has grown poor through tourism now hopes to become rich through artificial intelligence. Poverty is indirectly discussed, but not by the poor themselves. It is undoubtedly not about retraining the unemployed or creating jobs. Words like “broad prosperity” are not even empty words—they are absent.
