Action in Reflection
July 17, 2026
I often use the expression Reflection in Action. By this I mean that, while implementing, you continue to think critically about what you are doing, what is happening around you, and how circumstances are evolving. The traditional model of first analyzing and designing everything in detail before taking action is outdated. Real learning takes place during implementation, when you continuously reflect, adapt, and improve.
Today, however, I want to talk about the opposite: Action in Reflection.
I am referring to something I recognize in myself and that probably applies to many people who write regularly. We observe society, analyze developments, and constantly think about what could be improved or done differently. Reflection is valuable. Without it, we do not learn, grow, or develop.
But there is also a danger.
If we are not careful, we become spectators. We spend so much time trying to understand the world that life quietly unfolds around us. Reflection should never become a substitute for living.
That is why I try to remind myself that thinking should never become an excuse for postponing life. The real challenge is to enjoy the time we have been given, because time waits for no one.
So don't assume that, simply because I analyze social developments or write critically about governance and politics, I fail to appreciate life's simple pleasures. Quite the opposite. Those small moments are what give everything else meaning: my family, conversations at home, a walk, swimming two kilometers in Caracas Bay, a bike ride, a cup of coffee, our little dogs, and the many moments that require no analysis at all.
Perhaps this is true for more people than just me. We naturally want to understand the world, and sometimes even to improve it. That begins with careful observation and critical thinking. But living well also requires us, from time to time, to stop observing and simply participate.
There is a beautiful saying in English:
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass; it's about learning to dance in the rain.
Perhaps that is the finest expression of Action in Reflection: to keep thinking, while never forgetting to keep living.
