Ego

Ego

April 8, 2026

On March 26, I attended the CINEX stakeholders meeting. At first glance, it was a very well-organized gathering, held at a new-to-me location in Scharloo.

However, I must say that I missed a clear rationale for why we are seeking foreign investors. It did become clear that we aim to diversify into sectors beyond tourism. Unfortunately, there was no reference to CHATA’s cri de cœur to maintain a sense of restraint. The director of CINEX is well acquainted with CHATA, as he previously served as its director.

During the first break, my friend Sinuhe Oomen approached me. He noted that an innovation hub—a building or location—is set to launch soon in Villa Maria. A concept that was already explored at that same location in 2024. I told Sinuhe that I would be glad to see it materialize. I would appreciate it if that earlier effort were acknowledged, but at my age, that is no longer essential.

I also told him that I was even more pleased with the diaspora's structural integration into the strategy. This, too, is a line that has been advocated for years.

In the past two months, during which I did not write, I noticed how many ideas that were introduced and put on the agenda early on have now become widely accepted. Early attention was already drawn to the 30% living below the subsistence level, the disappearing middle class, and the fact that concrete and asphalt do not constitute development. It was also pointed out that the Curaçaoan economy is a mono-economy based on tourism, and that this sector is, in a sense, reaching its limits. In addition, it is important to look not only at economic growth, but also at the Gini coefficient. To name just a few points.

What I do not yet hear clearly is that we must move toward a human-centered society—Society 5.0. But I remain more than hopeful.
