It’s About the Connections

There are two separate news stories. In reality, there are many more, but I will limit myself to a few stories that are presented and read in isolation, even though they are all connected.

The first is about a study showing how many homes in ordinary residential neighborhoods are now being rented out to tourists as B&Bs, further disrupting the housing market.

The second story is that rental cars used by tourists have once again been set on fire outside their B&B apartments.

Add a third story: the many articles appearing in response to the small protest against uncontrolled tourism development. Then there is the story of a tourist who ended up underneath a fishing boat. And, related to this, reports of Sea-Doos failing to respect the designated separation of boating routes.

Then there is the restored market, which caters more to tourists than to local residents.

Taken together, these stories paint a picture of tourism develop-ment that has gotten out of hand. The carrying capacity study has pointed to this as well.

There is an urgent need to take action.
