human-development-indexWILLEMSTAD - Curaçao heeft een hoge welvaartsontwikkeling. Dat concludeert het Curaçaose Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek aan de hand van de zogeheten Human Development Index (HDI). Die bedraagt voor Curaçao 0.811.
Het eiland staat daarmee tussen Barbados met 0.825 en Trinidad & Tobago met 0.760 in. De Verenigde Staten hebben een HDI van 0.937; Nederland heeft 0.921. De gemiddelde HDI van Latijns-Amerika en het Caribisch gebied bedraagt 0.741."

En toch is er een plaag van muskieten en ratten in de wijken. Dit is deels een gevolg van de mentaliteit van de burgers, maar ook gebrek aan overheidsvoorlichting en het functioneren van overheidsdiensten.
