Curaçao’s Hydrogen Dream: Pet Project or True Energy Transition?
April 20, 2025
Curaçao has the ambition to become an exporter of hydrogen energy. To make this vision a reality, a fleet of floating wind turbines is planned for the island’s northern coast. The first demonstration hy-drogen plant is scheduled for 2027, according to a recent article by Dick Drayer — one of the few sources of information available to the public on this topic.

Within my professional network, many know about the project—yet no one really knows anything concrete. Mind you, I am surrounded by energy experts. The project is rarely mentioned in the media, and even during the recent energy transition conference, it was presented more as a vague outline than a clear roadmap.
Let me be clear: this is not an energy transition. A true transition happens when a society changes how it uses and produces energy, when people, communities, and industries shift together.
So what is this then?
It’s a pet project. A hobby, driven by one person or a small circle. That in itself is not necessarily a bad thing, until you realize it involves significant public investments. That money should benefit the whole community, not just the ambitions of a few.
So, what’s the call to action?
• Transparency.
• Inform the public.
• Involve experts outside the inner circle.
• Engage citizens.
Curaçao deserves more than selective information around such a high-stakes project.
